World at War Podcast

In response to the emergency of World War II, Hélion returned to France and joined the armed forces. Taken prisoner in June of 1940, he was held until 1942, when he managed to escape. This is his story.

Episode Six  On December 8, 1941, Gwen Dew  and two hundred other western civilians were held as prisoners of war until June 30, 1942. She arrived back in the United States on August 25, 1942. Music provided by DJ Topshelf of the Podsafe Music Network.

Episode Five On 31 December 1942, HMS Achates was on escort duty protecting a Russian convey.The German heavy cruiser the  Admiral Hipper,  and six large destroyers had been ordered to attack and destroy the convoy. Despite being heavily outgunned the escort, under the command of Captain R. Vincent Sherbrooke, beat off the attack and not one merchant vessel was lost. The HMS  Achates was sunk in the Barents Sea

 

Episode four On April 6, 1941, Hitler's forces, in alliance with the Hungarians and the Bulgarians, invaded Yugoslavia and Greece. The people of Yugoslavia fought bravely against the Nazis , but in the end proved to be too much for them and the Yugoslav army lay down its arms on April 18.1941. Episode Three is about how the Germans had expended more than 46.000 shells and 20.000 tons of bombs against Sevastopol.
